The Old Continue to Produce Works

Being over 60 years old is no obstacle to continue to achieve.

This was demonstrated by three artists, respectively: F Lukito (67), Mamiek Putut Agung (66), and Seni Asmara Sari (66) in an exhibition titled ”Sixty Plus” at Posnya Seni Godod, Yogyakarta. ”Age is indeed no obstacle in producing works,” commented Godod Sutejo, owner of Posnya Seni Godod who was also the exhibition’s initiator .

Besides depicting softness, several works of the three artists with different backgrounds also displayed fierceness and romanticism . In ”Hungry” for instance, Lukito recorded the savage wilderness of life. On canvas measuring 145x95 cm, the former Dwikora Kalimantan volunteer soldier illustrated a dying bull, still bleeding after being attacked by a tiger, while the tiger eventually died also from being hunted by sharp weapons of man. Lukito’s tale in ”Hungry” ends there, as though emphasizing that man was lord of the earth.

Lukito received a bachelor’s degree in community health from the Academy of Health Inspection Surabaya, then continued his studies at Riau
University to achieve a degree in public administration from the social
politics faculty . Softness and grandeur and strength are evident in ”Beautiful
Creations”. On canvas measuring 95x145 cm, Lukito drew a sketch
of the Prambanan Temple that towered high, appearing both sturdy and
dignified . In the foreground the figure of a woman was drawn wearing
sarong and chemise and carrying a water jug. The two elegant figures were intentionally combined here.

Mamiek PA’s works displayed romanticism of life. In ”Kasmaran” she painted
a pair of lovers in Javanese dress . The atmosphere was made more romantic
by the flowers and butterflies Mamiek placed in the background .

In ”Di Kebun”, the Bandung-born woman who now resides in Yogyakarta
still relied on a woman’s figure as the central object of her painting.
A mother was playing with her two children in a vast spread of garden
planted mainly with flowers.

”Occasionally when painting, my grandchildren come. They often provide
inspiration , so that frequently a painting suddenly changes by their
arrival,” said the grandmother of four grandchildren. She confessed she
has only painted totally in 1996, as previously she was kept busy by her
work routine in several places.

While Asmara Sari preferred natural surroundings as the main idea in
her works, for instance in paintings titled ”Merapi”, ”Pohon-pohon Tua”,
”Ikan Louhan”, ”Ikan Laga”, and ”Anggrek”.

”This exhibition shows her commitment and love in working in her chosen
profession,” said Godod.
